Job Description

Overview:
At an entry level, assists in performing duties in the field and shop for the installation, maintenance and repair of communications equipment. This position develops competence by performing structured work assignments and receives instruction, guidance and direction from supervisor, manager and/or more experienced colleagues.
Assists in installing, performing functional and calibration tests and performing routine and emergency maintenance of equipment within assigned areas.
Assists in interpreting schematics, drawings and technical manuals necessary to install, repair and align equipment to specifications.
Assists higher level technicians in the operation, evaluation and maintenance of equipment and systems within assigned areas.
Keeps supervisor informed of maintenance problems.
Assists in maintaining spare parts in good working order.
Maintains logs, files and reports to document the date, location and nature of work performed.
Updates equipment documentation, technical manuals, schematics, maintenance records and test reports.
Completes and turns in day-to-day documentation such as time tickets, mileage sheets and equipment trouble tickets.
Keeps files and records related to equipment inventories.
Knows and complies with all company and departmental policies and procedures.
Maintains safety and environmental compliance in the performance of all assigned duties. Attends and participates in monthly safety meetings.
Maintain a clean work area; office, shop, field sites and vehicle.
Technicians in the tower crew climb towers up to 600 feet to install and maintain equipment.
This position requires climbing telecommunications towers up to 600+ feet greater than 50% of the time.
Performs work by traveling independently or with a small crew to various locations as scheduled.

Physical demands:
Technicians in the tower crew climb towers up to 600 feet to install and maintain equipment.
This position requires climbing telecommunications towers up to 600+ feet greater than 50% of the time.
Work involves constant standing and/or walking in assisting with installation and repair of equipment
Work involves frequent finger/hand manipulation in use of test equipment, hand tools and soldering iron
Work involves climbing, crawling, crouching or other non-sitting positions in punching down phone cable, testing, installations, cable pulls and tower climbing less than 20% of the time
Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds less than 20% of the time
Pushes or pulls up to 50 pounds less than 20% of the time
Work involves finger/hand manipulation in using a keyboard and mouse less than 20% of the time

Knowledge of IP routing and Ethernet switching functions
Knowledge of local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), wireless and VoIP
Basic skill in reading and interpreting schematics and diagrams
Skill in troubleshooting electronic equipment
Skill in operating test equipment such as multimeters, RF meters, transmitter test sets, trunked radio programmers, etc.
Skill in providing customer care and support
Skill in programming Routers and Switches including voice enabled networking devices
Skill in configuring call routing in Cisco VoIP applications
Skill in troubleshooting basic LAN/WAN problems
Skill in troubleshooting basic VoIP quality problems
Basic skill level in RFL
Basic skill level in Hyper Terminal for direct serial connection to radios and Notebook computer
Basic skill level in Nortel operating system for telephone PBX programming
Basic skill in the use of LAN/WAN quality monitoring systems including VoIP monitoring tools
Basic skill level in Unix
Skill in communicating effectively with team members, supervision/management and external organizations under normal and emergency conditions
Ability to work independently in hazardous environments
Ability to work effectively, including remaining calm and alert, in high stress situations with minimal supervision
Ability to balance competing and high priority work demands
Work in the tower crew requires ability to climb radio towers

Minimum qualifications:
Driver's license
Experience in electronics and/or telecommunications maintenance
Experience in two-way radio installation
Experience in climbing towers
